Compare and Contrast

Something I catch myself doing a lot is comparing where I am in my life at this age with where Mom was at my age. I'm X years old doing foo, when Mom was X she was doing bar.

I've now reached age X where when Mom was X, I was Y. I can remember it myself, first-hand. When she was my age now, I was three. I know where we lived, and where she worked, and where I went to school. She was divorced. She was raising me on her own. I can't even imagine keeping a houseplant alive, and she was supporting us both.

My mother and I are more alike than we're different, I think. We're in very different fields, and have taken different directions with our lives, but there's a lot of common ground. She's definitely stronger than me, in a lot of ways.

Resolutions Followup

December 31, 2009 Resolutions

I failed. So hard. But, I also succeeded almost equally as hard.

I was more organized and spent more time with people: I even helped put together my family reunion! I budgeted. I did not exercise nearly as often as I claimed to want to-- this next year, I will!

I cancelled cable TV but not internet so spending more time with my DVR is kinda gone. I did not really write more; that's a goal for next year. Again. In fact, all of these goals are to be repeated for next year.

Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving, we're going to my partner's family to pay homage to the matriarch with casserole dishes, as good Midwesterners do. I've put myself on the hook for side dishes.

Dishes I'm planning on bringing
Oatmeal cookies (partner's family's recipe that I'm not to give out)
Cranberry sauce (Ginger)
Cranberry sauce (regular)
Green bean casserole

Outfit:
I've decided my theme colors shall be grey and pink, so I shall wear my fantastic Bearclaw boots-- that look almost identical to the more expensive Uggs as well as the less expensive Old Navy version-- with some skinny jeans and a grey sweater. I own several grey sweaters. Earrings will probably be the baby bird earrings I got from Uncommon Goods. Because themes are important, and just because I can't cook a bird doesn't mean it's not important.

Now, this is all for Thanksgiving proper. This weekend, I'm having an early Thanksgiving with my mother the strolling violinist, as she's working on Thanksgiving day. This day shall also have cranberry sauce of the above recipes, but probably not casseroles. I believe she's making lasagna. I know I'm bringing her cookies as well. My theme for this day shall be pink and grey still. I'm going to maliciously wear a sweater set and pearls at her; it really throws her off.

Specialization is for Insects

Misquoted and mangled from Time Enough for Love

A human being should be able to:
  • change a diaper: check!
  • plan an invasion: ...I can get your leftover pizza. That's invasion-like.
  • butcher a hog: oh, probably not, darling. I can gather leaves and such, though.
  • conn a ship: I...don't know what that is. So...no. Sorry!
  • design a building: in the most basic sense, yes! Woo-hoo, another one done!
  • write a sonnet: sure, okay!
  • balance accounts: to some extent, sure...
  • build a wall: out of cardboard boxes especially!
  • set a bone: yes.
  • comfort the dying: I hope I can.
  • take orders: sir, yes, sir!
  • give orders: sir, yes, sir!
  • cooperate: yes! If we just do things my way, especially.
  • act alone: absolutely.
  • solve equations: 2 + 2 = 5
  • analyze a new problem: sure!
  • pitch manure: even know where I could get the pitchfork!
  • program a computer: gosh, I hope so...
  • cook a tasty meal: definitely
  • fight efficiently: hopefully!
  • die gallantly: I will be the best at being dead.
